Forte do Topo

The date of the construction of this fort on the wharf of the village of Topo is not known for sure, but it is possible to belong to the defensive efforts of the island of São Jorge in the XVII century. There are several reports of the passage, some cases relate to of plunders of moors on the coast of Vila do Topo.

Its ruin is reported in the early nineteenth century, the old fort was shaped like a pentagon, with four fire hydrants and a guard house inside. Their abandonment may be related to insufficient housekeeping efforts.

The section that is observed today is a reconstruction of the XX century of a wall section of modern masonry on the ancient one.
