Praça Velha - Largo Dr. José Pereira

The noble place of the village, formerly known as "Largo do Mercado”, is situated in front of the Igreja Matriz de São Jorge and next to the imposing Santa Casa da Misericórdia building. For its original construction, a manor of Dr. Miguel Teixeira Soares (former owner of the property) was expropriated, as well as a chapel and some houses.

The place served as a market for fruits and vegetables. The statue in honour of a great meritorious man from São Jorge who, emigrated to the USA, made a fortune in oil and supported several institutions of the island, namely the Misericordia de Velas, as can be read next to the statue of João Inácio de Sousa, in the centre of the square .
