Reduto São José Também denominado Forte das Caravelas

The São José’s Stronghold was proposed by Marcos de Teive, in 1618, was integrated in the defensive network of the São Jorge island and was redefined and updated after the attacks from French privateers.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the stronghold was completely demolished due to maintenance problems. Nowadays, it is possible to observe a piece of the old masonry and a cannon, integrated in the sea wall.
