Torre velha da Igreja de São Mateus

The old Church of São Mateus was destroyed in the volcanic eruption of 1808 and only a bell tower was left standing, which fed several local myths associated to the event. The eruption destroyed part of its foundations, vestments and assets, therefore, nowadays, its initial architecture is not known. Nowadays, even though it is located in private land, we may observe the surviving bell tower on the location. In the Rural Exhibition Centre of Urzelina, a lintel stone of the baroque period, with an embossed decoration with volutes, may be found.
